A landfill is designed to store and compress waste in an orderly manner without contaminating water or soil. However, under these conditions, there is very little oxygen (an anaerobic environment), which hinders the population of bacteria that break down materials, even organic waste.
The test method by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) called ASTM D5526 verifies whether a material is biodegradable in a landfill. bax® shrink film complies with this test method. This makes it the only correct path for sustainable packaging.
It’s important to remember that plastics available in the market (made from cornstarch, avocado seed, etc.) are not biodegradable in any way because chemically, they are identical to conventional petroleum-based plastics.
