In the United Kingdom, 8 out of 10 people believe that paper cups are recyclable. This misconception is not much different elsewhere on the planet, as most people believe that the paper cup they use for their coffee is or will be recycled simply because it’s made of paper. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Let us explain why and introduce you to the first and only solution that already exists in Mexico.

They’re Not Just Made of Paper

Paper dissolves when it comes into contact with water, so it must be coated with plastic. Commonly, plastics like High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) are added to it. While this makes them suitable for containing beverages, it’s the very reason that makes them problematic.

They Will Pollute for Hundreds of Years

Due to this plastic coating, they are not biodegradable. Even though the paper may degrade, the plastic will remain on the planet for at least hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics that affect our health, our food, and animals in whatever environment they end up in: the sea or land.

They Are Not Recycled in Mexico

Almost all of these cups, even if labeled as “recyclable,” are not recycled because special machines are required for this process, and such recycling facilities are scarce in Mexico. This misinformation deceives consumers, restaurant owners, cafeterias, supermarkets, and consumers alike.

They End Up in Landfills

Since there’s no way to recycle them, the majority end up in landfills, where they will remain for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

And There, They Contribute to Global Warming

As mentioned earlier, the two types of plastics used to coat these cups release two of the most critical greenhouse gases when exposed to sunlight: ethylene and methane. So, if these cups end up in a landfill or the ocean, they become a problem that contributes to the biggest challenge facing modern humanity: climate change.

The First and Only Solution for Disposable Cups

Cups made of Biovitalio® are the first and only plastic-free cups that can be planted. This means that in just 12 weeks, the plant will have absorbed 100% of the cup, providing it with nutrients for growth. It’s also 100% recyclable in Mexico, just like cardboard boxes, which means it can be recycled without loss, returning it to the production cycle for other valuable products like packaging materials. This is a perfect example of a circular packaging, meaning it adheres to the principles of the circular economy.
